Where it all began

It was still dark out at 7:00 a.m.

…when I dropped my two sons off at their school bus stop. As I watched the bus pull away, the sun just then breaking on the horizon, a text arrived from my eldest, saying “Mom, I’m a girl.” I stared at my phone, mostly thinking “wait, what?” What did this mean? What was the best way to respond? Was this a passing kid comment or was there something new and important happening in our lives?

I’d always been close with my kids, and I was no stranger to LGBTQIA+ issues, but suddenly I had questions.

A lot of questions. 

Even after good, long conversations with my daughter (daughter! wow!), there were parenting questions that it wasn’t her responsibility to answer.

How do I guide my transgender daughter through sometimes scary and always uncharted territory?

How can I help her be her most powerful self?

How was I going to navigate extended family dynamics?

What did I need to understand socially, medically, legally about the transition process?

And how was I to manage all that needed managing while holding a loving relationship with my daughter as the number one priority?

With real delight, I discovered that I didn’t need to address that last question directly.

I found that allyship with my trans daughter created connection and an openness that blossomed on its own, and our relationship grew and deepened in ways I couldn’t have predicted.
