Hello, friends! I try to periodically post blogs about helpful resources for families, and it’s way past time that I wrote about one of the most remarkable resources in Portland. If you don’t yet know about the TransActive Gender Project at Lewis and Clark College, hold on to your hats!
This incredible program was started by Jenn Burleton, and she’s done an amazing job growing it with a terrific team. It really is a major hub of support and education for families with kids on gender journeys, and here are a few of the services offered:
Classes: you can sign up for classes such as Raising a Transgender Child or Deciphering Anti-Trans Disinformation (both of which I can personally say are excellent and full of critical information)
Resource databases that include healthcare, mental health resources, legal support options, and lots more.
Family, adult, and youth support groups to help you build community and support.
Professional Development training to help schools, youth-serving organizations, HR departments, and anyone else looking to expand their knowledge of inclusivity, diversity, and the current laws that support them.
They even have a Gender Diversity Certificate Program, which I am thrilled to have been admitted to and will be starting in the fall. I’ll keep you posted as to how it goes and what I learn!
This is an organization I immediately fell in love with, and I’m so impressed with their tireless dedication to making sure that humans are allowed to be full, authentic people, that kids are loved for who they are, and that institutions, schools and workplaces keep everyone safe. The TransActive Gender Project is truly family focused in the way that they support families, but they also extend their work to the wider world so that those families can send their kids to school, clubs and sports practice with confidence and security. Talk about good work in a world that needs it!
During the Raising a Transgender Child class, the teacher (Jenn) said something that felt so powerful to me: “trans and non-binary people aren’t breaking rules, they’re breaking chains.” If that isn’t a point of view that supports your brave, wonderful child, I can’t think of what is!
For so many kinds of support, please check out the TransActive Gender Project website. It’s a real powerhouse of a group that is there to support the human needs of the LGBTQIA+ community and their families. It’s not to be missed!
And, as always, I’m here to help and support your needs as well. If you want your support to be one-on-one, uniquely individualized to your parenting needs, and paced in a way that serves you best, book a complimentary, 20 minute consultation with me to see if coaching is right for you. You can tell me about your concerns, your hopes, and your challenges, and we can see what we can do to make sure your unique family situation blooms and thrives. You can also check me out at nurturelifecoaching.com, so please don’t hesitate! And in the meantime, be sure to see what support the TransActive Gender Project might hold for you!
Best wishes to all!
